The students in the Leopold Student Advocacy Team (self-named Leopold Community Leaders) came by to pick out their bikes today. They are students that were selected by their teachers as being influencers in the classroom. The goal of the club is to identify things in their neighborhood that prevent people from being active, then do projects that address some of those needs. The projects that were identified this year include: traffic calming for bike to school day, painting lines for a football field behind the school, and painting benches in front of the school. In addition to their time in the group, the students are also responsible for doing community service outside of the club. The 3rd and 4th graders have been meeting with teacher facilitators of the club during their recess time to help with a variety of projects throughout the school, such as cleaning up garbage on the playground, shelving books in the library, and sorting recycling. The 5th graders are completing their additional service hours by participating in the "Reading Buddies" program, where they meet with a kindergartner each week and read with them. Some of the students are also going above and beyond by doing service outside of the club by cleaning up garbage at their local park, cleaning up dog poop at the dog park, and even making blankets for animals at shelters!
